Vienna — what to expect

The capital of Austria and, for a long time, the capital of half of Europe. Vienna is an imperial city that never stopped behaving like one: wide boulevards, coffee houses where one coffee buys an afternoon, and an opera the citizens treat as theirs. It is the nearest great European capital to Sarajevo.

What to see

  • Schönbrunnthe Habsburgs’ summer palace, 1,441 rooms, and a park you can walk for free. The climb to the Gloriette repays itself in the view.
  • St Stephen’s Cathedralthe patterned tiled roof at the centre of town; 343 steps up the south tower.
  • Hofburgthe winter residence, now museums and the imperial treasury.
  • The Ringstrassethe boulevard built where the city walls came down. Trams 1 and 2 are the cheapest sightseeing tour in the city.
  • Naschmarkta market of more than a hundred stalls, with a flea market on Saturdays.
  • Christmas marketsmid-November to Christmas. The largest is in front of the City Hall; the loveliest are the smaller ones: Freyung, Spittelberg, Schönbrunn.

History in brief

A Roman camp called Vindobona, then the seat of the Habsburgs for six centuries — the dynasty that took Bosnia in 1878. That is why Sarajevo, Mostar and Banja Luka carry Austro-Hungarian buildings that look lifted from the Ringstrasse: same decades, same architects, same stone. For many of our travellers Vienna is not a foreign city so much as a relative.

What to eat

  • Wiener Schnitzelveal, beaten thin. Look for the places that specify “vom Kalb”.
  • Sachertortechocolate cake with apricot jam; the original is at the Sacher, but nearly every café has its own.
  • Apfelstrudel and Kaiserschmarrnapple strudel, and a shredded pancake dusted with sugar.
  • Glühwein and punchat the markets, in a mug you pay a deposit for. Return the mug and get the deposit back.
  • Käsekrainera cheese-filled sausage from a street stand; Vienna’s late-night meal.

Before you go

  • Public transport is excellent and runs on trustbuy and validate a ticket. Inspections are frequent and the fine is steep.
  • Bring cash for the Christmas markets: many stalls do not take cards.
  • In a coffee house nobody hurries you. One coffee buys an hour at the table and the newspapers.
  • Shops close on Sundays, except at the railway stations.
  • The centre is pedestrianised and is best seen on foot.

When to go

Advent, from mid-November to Christmas, is why most of our travellers go — cold, but the city at its best. May and September are warm and calm. July and August are hot and full.
