City guide

Budapest — what to expect

Two cities joined by a river: hilly Buda with the castle, flat Pest with the boulevards. Budapest is big, cheaper than Vienna, and has something no other European capital does — a hundred and twenty-odd thermal springs underneath it.

What to see

  • The Parliamentthe largest building in Hungary, best at night from the Pest embankment.
  • Fisherman’s Bastionwhite turrets above the Danube with the best view of the Parliament. In winter the upper terrace is free and it stays open on public holidays.
  • Buda Castle and Gellért Hilltwo hills, two views; up by funicular or on foot.
  • The Chain Bridgethe first permanent crossing between the two banks.
  • The thermal bathsSzéchenyi is the famous one, with outdoor pools where people play chess in winter. Gellért is art nouveau and quieter.
  • Ruin barsbars in derelict buildings in the seventh district; Szimpla Kert was the first and is still going.
  • The Great Market Hallthree floors of food, paprika and souvenirs.

History in brief

Buda, Pest and Óbuda were separate towns until 1873. The Ottomans held Buda for a century and a half and left behind Turkish baths that are still working — Rudas and Király date from the sixteenth century. Most of what now reads as one coherent city was built for the millennium celebrations of 1896: the Parliament, the underground railway, the Fisherman’s Bastion.

What to eat

  • Goulashin Hungary it is a soup, not a stew. What we call goulash is pörkölt there.
  • Lángosfried dough with sour cream and cheese, from a market stall.
  • Strudel with poppy seed and pumpkin.
  • Kürtőskalácschimney cake baked on a spit, at every winter market.
  • Tokajithe sweet wine from the north-east; the “wine of kings”.

Before you go

  • The currency is the forint, not the euro. Exchange offices on the main streets give a worse rate than those a street back; avoid changing money at the airport.
  • Order taxis by app or have the hotel call oneflagged-down cabs have been known to charge multiples.
  • For the baths bring flip-flops, a swimming cap and a towel, or hire them there.
  • On New Year’s Eve the centre closes to traffic; the fireworks are best from the Chain Bridge and Gellért Hill.
  • Winter is cold, often around freezingbring layers.

When to go

May, June and September are the most comfortable. New Year is why most of our travellers go — the city is full, cold and lit. July and August are hot, but the baths answer that.
