Neum — what to expect

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only outlet to the sea — twenty-four kilometres of coast and one town on it. Neum is a quiet family holiday: a bay with no waves, hotels at the water’s edge, and prices noticeably below those across the border.

What to see

  • The bay of Neumsheltered and shallow, so the sea is calm and warmer than the open coast; which is what makes it good with children.
  • The seafront promenadecafés, souvenirs and restaurants from one end of town to the other.
  • Klekthe peninsula and hill opposite, the silhouette from every terrace in town.
  • Hutovo Blatoa wetland reserve half an hour away with nearly 250 migratory bird species, visited by boat.
  • Stolac and Počiteljstone towns in the hinterland, a half-day trip.
  • Dubrovnikunder an hour away, the easiest day trip from Neum.

History in brief

This strip of coast has been outside Dubrovnik since 1699, when the Republic deliberately ceded it to the Ottomans as a buffer against Venice. A border drawn three centuries ago is the reason Bosnia and Herzegovina has a coastline at all. The town you see was built mostly in the 1960s and 70s as a resort.

What to eat

  • Fresh fish and shellfish from the baythe mussels and oysters are farmed right there, in the Bay of Mali Ston.
  • Herzegovinian lamb and pekainland, where it is also cheaper.
  • Žilavka and BlatinaHerzegovina’s white and red, from Čitluk and Mostar.
  • Soparnik and uštipcithe simple home cooking people make in the apartments.

Before you go

  • The beaches are largely concrete with steps into the water and little sand — bring swimming shoes.
  • Neum is a duty-free zone, so alcohol, tobacco and electronics are cheaper than in Croatia; there are limits on what may be carried across the border.
  • The Sarajevo–Neum road crosses a border; since the Pelješac bridge opened the Croatian transit is rarer, but carry documents regardless.
  • July and August are the busiest. June and September have the same sea and half the people.
  • There are cash machines, but smaller landlords prefer cash.

When to go

The sea is warm from mid-June to mid-September. June and September are the best balance of price, crowds and water. Out of season the town is very quiet and some hotels close.
