City guide

Istanbul — what to expect

The only city in the world standing on two continents. Istanbul has been a capital for fifteen centuries — Roman, then Byzantine, then Ottoman — and it shows on every corner: a church turned mosque, a Roman cistern under a car park, a sixteenth-generation trader in the bazaar.

What to see

  • Hagia Sophia1,500 years old; cathedral, then mosque, then museum, and a working mosque again since 2020. Shoes off, headscarf for women.
  • Blue Mosqueacross the square, six minarets and 20,000 blue İznik tiles. Free to enter, closed during prayers.
  • Topkapı Palacethe Ottoman sultans’ palace above the Bosphorus. The Harem is a separate ticket and worth it.
  • Basilica Cisterna Roman underground reservoir, 336 columns and two Medusa heads. Cold and quiet in the middle of the noise.
  • Grand Bazaar4,000 shops under one roof since the fifteenth century. Haggling is expected, not rude.
  • A Bosphorus ferrythe best way to understand the city. The ordinary commuter ferry costs about the same as a tram ticket.

History in brief

Founded as the Greek Byzantion, it became Constantinople in 330 when Constantine moved the Roman capital to the Bosphorus. For a thousand years it was the richest city in Europe. Mehmed the Conqueror took it in 1453 and made it the heart of the Ottoman Empire, which also ruled Bosnia for the next four centuries — which is why Sarajevo’s Baščaršija feels familiar the first time you walk into the Grand Bazaar.

What to eat

  • Balık ekmekgrilled fish in bread, straight off the boats by the Eminönü bridge. Cheap and better than the restaurants.
  • Simitthe sesame ring sold on every corner; half the city’s breakfast.
  • İskender kebabmeat over torn flatbread with yoghurt and melted butter.
  • Pistachio baklavalook in Karaköy or Eminönü rather than on the tourist streets.
  • Turkish coffee and çaytea is drunk all day from tulip glasses and is usually free while you look at carpets.

Before you go

  • Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport. It covers metro, tram, bus and ferry, and is far cheaper than single tickets.
  • Mosques: shoes off, hair covered for women, shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Scarves are lent at the door.
  • Drink bottled water.
  • Haggle. The first price in the bazaar is not the price.
  • Traffic is seriousthe ferry between the European and Asian sides is faster than a taxi.
  • Bring walking shoes: Sultanahmet is cobbles and hills.

When to go

April–June and September–November: warm rather than hot, and less crowded. July and August run past 30°C with humidity. Winter is mild and wet, and the city is at its cheapest and emptiest.
