City guide

Dubrovnik — what to expect

A stone city inside its own walls, the whole of it UNESCO-protected. Dubrovnik takes a day to see and stays with you longer — everything is inside the walls, everything is the same white stone, and there are no cars.

What to see

  • The city wallsa circuit of nearly two kilometres around the Old Town, an hour and a half to two hours to walk. This is the reason people come.
  • Stradunthe main street, polished to a shine by centuries of feet.
  • The Srđ cable carthe city and islands from above; best just before sunset.
  • Lokruman island fifteen minutes away by boat, with peacocks and an old Benedictine monastery.
  • Bokar and Minčeta fortressesthe best points on the walls for a photograph.
  • The old harbourwhere the boats leave from and where the fish is eaten.

History in brief

For five centuries an independent republic that survived between Venice and the Ottomans not by armies but by diplomacy and money. Napoleon ended it in 1808. The great earthquake of 1667 flattened almost all of it — what you walk today is the baroque rebuild, which is why the Stradun is flat and uniform while the side streets are stairs.

What to eat

  • Fresh fish and seafoodthe simplest preparation is usually the best one.
  • Black risottocuttlefish, cooked in its own ink.
  • Rožatathe Dalmatian caramel custard; the house dessert.
  • Pekameat or octopus under the bell; order it in advance.
  • Malvazija and Pošipthe southern white wines. Dingač is the red, from Pelješac, right beside the road you arrive on.

Before you go

  • Start the walls early, right at opening. After ten the cruise passengers arrive and the sun bites — there is almost no shade up there.
  • Carry water and a hat.
  • The St John’s Fortress entrance usually has the shortest queue.
  • No cars in the Old Town; the coach sets you down at the Pile Gate.
  • Prices inside the walls are well above the rest of Croatialunch two streets off the Stradun costs half.

When to go

May, June and September: warm sea, bearable heat, fewer cruise ships. July and August are hot and crowded. For a day trip from Neum or Sarajevo any month from April to October works.
